For the Love of Issa's Haiku

Jannie Edwards

Updated: Oct 27, 2022

I’ve long loved this haiku by Japanese poet and Buddhist priest Kobayashi Issa (1763 – 1828), here translated by Jane Hirshfield.

On a branch

Floating downriver

A cricket singing

My friend Monica Li arranged for her artist and scholar friend, Professor Wan, in China to calligraphy the poem for me.
