Book Launch (November 17, 2022)
Book Launch of Learning Their Names: Letters from the Home Place,
by Jannie Edwards and Sydney Lancaster published by Collusion Books, Halifax.
Make=Believe is an evolving slow-art project that Sydney started in 2011 on our five-acre, off-grid settler homestead northeast of Edmonton. Over the last decade this work led to deeper conversations about Settler-Colonialism, our responsibilities and complicity in this system, and how we respond to these forces through the stewardship of a small bit of the planet we love deeply. The project has been an opportunity to listen to and learn from the other-than-human presences of the place and to explore the connections between place, history, ownership, displacement, and erasure within Settler-Colonialism. These connections continue to fuel archival and geological research and the potential for art and writing to express this learning.

Over a year during the pandemic (December 2021 – December 2022), Sydney and I continued this conversation through an exchange of poetic letters across the country–me in Edmonton, Alberta, and Sydney in Wolfville, Nova Scotia.
Location and time details forthcoming!
Preview: Two letters from this collection appear in Understorey, a literary journal published in Lunenburg, Nova Scotia in partnership with Mount St. Vincent University in Halifax.

Writing Letters from Liminal Space, Workshop with Jannie Edwards, Edmonton Poetry Festival, January 4, 2021
Liminal, from limen, threshold. Here we find ourselves, in the crossing-over space from the old to the new year, looking back and looking ahead. This workshop offers inspiration and shared time to reflect on and write from this transitional time. Thinking about liminal space can take you in so many directions: The threshold between dream and wakefulness, waiting in rooms for. . . ?, exploring abandoned spaces, thresholds between one stage of life and the next, travel and stasis, the space between inspiration and creation, between writing a letter or a poem and waiting for a response . . .
